Yes, apple gave the code name Kalamata to this initiative, to replace microprocessors for all apple’s devices includes Macs, iPhones & iPads, in order to make them work similarly and seamlessly together.

However this is not the first effort by apple below is the list of microprocessor produced by apple Inc in-house :-

  • A series used in iphones ipad ipod & apple TV
  • S series used in apple watch.
  • W series processors focuses on Wireless & Bluetooth connectivity
  • T series processor are meant for processing & encrypting fingerprints for macbook & iMac pros

But having it’s own processing unit will have following impacts for developers :-

  1. New Architecture means more low level API will be introduce.
  2. All apps will be required to be updated for the new architecture
  3. Apple is aiming to provide all in one  processing architecture so APIs for driver will be same for almost all devices.
  4. Briding gap between iOS and Mac OS.
  5. More processing power for Swift Language.
  6. Apps on this processor will surely out perform apps running on intel’s processor.
  7. Cross Platform projects will need new components and APIs to incoperate  new APIs.

Over all this will create new opportunity for developer and could be game changers. This is something progressing and apple is yet to give an official statement.
